Havant Thicket Reservoir 2024-5

Report on our work 2024-5

  • Currently being constructed by Portsmouth Water.
  • Funded by Southern Water
  • Will be filled by excess water from Bedhampton Springs in Winter.
  • We already have enough water in this area.
  • Reservoir to provide water to south-west Hampshire which is short of water.
  • Will prevent abstraction from rare chalk streams, the Itchen and Test.
  • Reservoir will be completed around 2030
  • We are represented on the Reservoir Stakeholders’ group.
  • Also on the Environment sub-group.
  • We regularly respond to Reservoir related planning applications.

Portsmouth Water are carrying out large scale projects to mitigate for environmental and ecological loss.

  • Large-scale tree planting
  • Habitat restoration.
  • Re-wilding a farm near Finchdean.
  • Reservoir will include a wetland area along its northern edge.

We have the advantage of advice from a retired environmental specialist, with a long history of working in the water industry. As a result we have frequently raised issues when there is scope for plans to be improved. Among issues raised:

  • Need for wider wildlife corridors east and west of the reservoir.
  • Environmental impact of pipeline route from Bedhampton Springs to the Reservoir.
  • Wetland design.
  • Design and location of Visitor Centre within Wetland.
  • Design of the Valve Tower and Control House.
  • Changes to the position of the Embankment.
  • Design of Access Roads.
