Havant Community Energy (HCE) is a volunteer-led group that facilitates, promotes and invests in renewable energy. We are working with the local authority to put solar panels on community centres—an immediate, visible step toward a cleaner future. We are investigating the feasibility of putting solar panels on a landfill using proven methods to increase biodiversity. We are also examining the viability of innovative solutions like battery storage, small wind turbines, tidal power, geothermal energy, and energy networks.
Green energy will be produced locally and sold locally reducing strain on the grid. By focusing on deprived areas in Havant, we can reduce energy poverty. The community energy model uses grant funding and investment through share offering and/or eco-loans. These are paid off using the income from the energy produced through power purchase agreements with energy users or from smart export guarantees from energy fed into the grid.
Because we are filed with the FCA as a Charitable Benefit Society all our profits will be put back into the community. We are also a member of Community Energy England and CoopUK. We are a diverse group including retired scientist, environmental engineer, logistics manager, councillors, accountant, retired university professor, HR specialist, geologist, all intent on reducing carbon emissions. We have twelve active members that meet monthly.
It’s an ambitious mission, but with strong partnerships with Havant Borough Authorities and Havant Climate Alliance, real progress is already underway.
