Resources on the Climate for Faith Groups

This Autumn we’ll be organising our second Havant Borough Big Green Week

Could your place of worship organise a special service? A display? A coffee morning? a display? Videos? A speaker?

There are lots of resources including the Climate Emergency Toolkit which guides your church or Christian organisation through simple but powerful actions that have an impact far beyond your own walls or community.

Faith for the Climate links to lots of different faith groups and their resources on the climate and also gives ideas of campaigns and examples of projects.

And there’s a great list of ideas here

All of these organisations have materials you could use and many will supply speakers.

CAFOD
The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development has lots of great resources including be a Zero Hero and Our Common Home plus more for schools and youth groups

Christian Aid
Lots of ideas and resources too, especially right now on divesting from fossil fuels.

Earthday
Ideas, campaigns and resources for various faiths

Eco Church
A Rocha has an eco-church project which offers a free online survey and supporting resources It covers looking after buildings and land; engaging with the local community and in global campaigns, and in the personal lifestyles of the congregation. Activities can lead to an Eco-Award.

Eco Synagogue
Provides a practical and simple roadmap for synagogues. Eco Synagogue is a cross-denominational project with synagogues from each of the movements invited to participate. Eco Synagogue was developed in partnership with A Rocha, founders of Eco Church, and launched in January 2018.

Green Christian
Lots of ideas for action and worship resources.

GreenFaith
An interfaith coalition for the environment that works with houses of worship, religious schools, and people of all faiths to help them become better environmental stewards.
This site is based in the USA and some of its sections relate specifically to activities (some of which could be models for wider adoption).

Hope for the Future

A Christian organisation which trains people in communicating with MPs and working with local councils

Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences (IFEES) /Eco-Islam is a UK registered charity operating internationally, through programmes designed to increase knowledge and awareness, alleviate poverty, combat climate change and deal with other major environmental issues. Working with the churches to inspire action on climate change, Operation Noah has resources, Bible studies and a divestment campaign.

Tearfund
Has resources and to tackle injustice and see a breakthrough in the climate crisis. They include Christianity and Climate Change, Tearfund’s nine-part film series for small groups featuring Katharine Hayhoe, the internationally renowned Christian climate scientist.

Ummah for Earth is an alliance-led initiative, with the goal to empower Muslim communities who are facing crises. The alliance addresses the pressing challenges facing our world. Together, we can take action toward a positive change.
